Job Nature of Ultrasound Technicians

The job of the ultrasound technician consists of the health care professional who operates the ultrasound machine.   Sound waves are used by the machines for creating the images of blood vessels, tissues and the internal organs for analyzing and interpreting by the physician who use them for diagnosing the ailments or the disease. The primary use of the ultrasound machine is for viewing the fetus in womb for tracking its growth.    


Ultrasounds or sonography represent the branch of medicinal science which is used for detecting the medical conditions via the images which are generated by the sound waves. Ultrasounds are also used for obstetrics for viewing the infants during the pregnancy period; the field has many applications which include abdominal sonography, neurosonography and ophthalmologic sonography.  The major duties involved in the job of ultrasound technicians are


  • Providing the details of procedures to patients and then explaining about what all to expect.
  • Handling of the equipments correctly.
  • Patient's medical history is recorded when necessary.
  • Maintenance and adjustment of the equipments.
  • Assisting the patient for moving in the correct direction to get the best image.
  • Maintaining the records of the patient.
  • Offering the clearest and best image for the physicians to get the right diagnosis.
  • Evaluate the purchase of the equipment.
  • Preparations of the work schedule.


Becoming the ultrasound technicians require specialized training in the diagnostic medical sonography technology through the following alternatives like

 

  • Training in the hospitals.
  • Training from the vocational institutions.  
  • Training from the universities or colleges through the programs which ranges from 2 years to 4 years. 
  • Training in armed forces.


Most of the formal training program is accredited. The ultrasound technicians need not have license for working in the ultrasound field in US. However the technicians must possess certification that is given by the ARDMS. The students must pass the special exam and the general exam for getting registration from the ARDMS.The job of the ultrasound technician is greatly dependent on the qualifications, specializations and the skills. Various other factors are listed below.


  • Physical strength and stamina for lifting, turning or for assisting the patient in moving to the better image.
  • Capability to learn in detail about and the operations of the diagnostic equipment that is used for ultrasound.
  • Strong communication skill is required to interact with the patients of all kind.
  • Visual training to select the correct image for the diagnosis.
  • Accurate organizing and recording skill for the patient's information.
